EMC Corporation has published the results of a survey which focused on identifying the role played by big data in the decision making process of Indian IT managers.

The survey results show that about 91 per cent of the businesses believe that big data leads to improved decision making and has a significant impact on companies? competitive differentiation and ability to avoid risk. Majority of the companies in India continue to bank upon IT innovations to compete locally and on the global stage. The key drivers for the transformation of IT systems and infrastructure in India include business process/operational efficiencies (61 per cent) and improved governance and compliance (46 per cent). About 79 per cent of the respondents are of the view that they posses the right level of skills and knowledge to carry forward their business priorities successfully. Amongst those surveyed 82 per cent of the respondents point out that going forward upgrading skills to keep pace with fast-changing IT landscape and innovation is going to be a challenge. However, 80 per cent of the respondents believe that IT industry is mature enough to handle the most essential business priorities.
Further, study shows about 26 per cent of companies have no plans of implementing big data technology in the short-term. Culture (35 per cent) followed by no clear business case or proven return on investment (28 per cent) are the two most common inhibitors to big data adoption amongst Indian companies.
Commenting on survey results, Rajesh Janey, president, EMC India and SAARC, says, ?While there is consensus in the business community that data would enable better decision making, culture seems to be the biggest issue that businesses will need to overcome as India continues its journey as a progressive economy.?
