According to the government, amid concerns that India’s fast-growing artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing sectors could consume nearly 37.5 billion litres of water annually, the industry is adopting advanced cooling technologies to reduce water usage.

Meanwhile, as stated by NatConnect Foundation, the estimated consumption is equivalent to the yearly water needs of around 0.7-0.8 million people, or enough to supply a metro city for about a week. The assessment is based on the urban water usage norm of 135 litres per person per day set by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation.

In a letter to the government last month, NatConnect director warned that the expansion of the sector could pose risks to India’s water security. Responding to the concerns, Ministry of Jal Shakti noted that India’s data centre capacity has increased from 375 megawatt (MW) in 2020 to over 1,500 MW in 2025. The ministry also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve sustainability, including initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, wastewater reuse and digital groundwater monitoring.
