According to Ericsson, about 6.5 billion new users were added by service providers in the second quarter of 2013. These comprise 4.5 billion dual subscriptions.

At the end of the period under review, the mobile broadband users stood at 1.8 billion. The 4G user base in the second quarter of 2013 stood at 125 million and the mobile data usage was over 1,600 Petabytes per month. Meanwhile, 55 per cent of the total mobile phone sales in the quarter under review were smartphones.

Ericsson states that China accounted for about 30 per cent of the global net mobile subscriber additions in the second quarter of 2013. The country added 30 million new subscribers followed by Indonesia (9 million), India (8 million), Bangladesh (5 million), and Nigeria (4 million). The total net additions in the quarter under review stood at 105 million. The global mobile penetration reached 91 per cent in the second quarter of 2013.
