Nelco, a part of Tata Group, has applied for a global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) licence with an aim to launch broadband-from-space services. With this, it has become the fourth company in India to do so.
According to the company, it has applied for a GMPCS licence which will enable it to offer newer services in the future. Nelco further stated that it has conducted a demonstration of high-speed broadband connectivity with the help of Canada-based Telesat’s low earth orbit (LEO) satellite.
So far, the government has granted licences to Oneweb and Reliance Jio Infocomm’s satellite arm, while SpaceX awaits government approval.
