According to a study by Juniper Research, telecom operators’ revenue from 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) services is projected to grow from $515 million in 2022 to $2.5 billion in 2023, growing by 480 per cent. Meanwhile, the research firm has forecasted that telecom operators’ 5G FWA revenue will reach $24 billion globally by 2027. The report attributes this growth to 5G’s advanced capabilities, such as ultra-low latency, and increased data processing to provide connectivity services that were previously unachievable with 4G technology.
As per report, the consumer market will generate the highest revenue for operators, representing 96 per cent of overall revenues. That said, Juniper Research also recommended that telcos must provide a compelling user proposition for FWA solutions through bundling of additional services such as video streaming, gaming, and smart home security in order to improve user experience and gain a competitive advantage over technologies such as fibre-to-the-property (FTTP).
Besides, the report identifies private networks as a key monetisation opportunity, offering superior network capabilities over 4G. The report finds smart manufacturing, shipping ports, and airports as likely verticals where telcos may apply 5G FWA. It further recommends that operators use 5G FWA to facilitate the last mile-solution by collaborating with fibre networks to maximise return on investment.
