At a meeting held on April 20, 2026, the Supreme Committee on Road Safety directed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to de-license the 5.875–5.925 GHz band. The spectrum will be made available to all stakeholders under predefined conditions.
In a move aimed at reducing road accidents caused by wrong-side driving, blind curves, construction zones and open pits, the telecom department will de-license a spectrum band to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication systems.
The norms for V2V communication are expected to be notified by December 2026, and vehicle manufacturers have already begun integrating this frequency band into their systems.
The supreme court panel has directed ITS India Forum and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers to coordinate with stakeholders and roll out safety features using this spectrum band within six months.
