The first batch of indigenous graphics processing units (GPUs) from India is reportedly expected to be ready for technology demonstrations by the end of 2025. These trials will enable the government to assess the technical readiness and commercial viability of the home-grown GPUs, which are projected to be production-ready by 2029.
These GPUs are being developed under the Rs 103.72 billion IndiaAI Mission. As part of the mission, 10 companies have submitted bids to procure and supply a total of 18,693 GPUs, which exceeds the initial target of 10,000 units. The bidders have been asked to deliver 12,896 Nvidia H100 GPUs, 1,480 Nvidia H200 GPUs, and other models including the MI325 and MI300X.
Further, the upcoming demonstrations aim to showcase the capabilities of India-made GPUs beyond routine graphics rendering, with a focus on high-performance applications such as complex mathematical operations, parallel processing using artificial intelligence (AI), advanced machine learning (ML), and scientific simulations.
Going forward, based on the technical requirements of these processors, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) may initiate discussions with global chipmakers and designers later this year.
