China-based handet vendor, Gionee is planning to go for contract manufacturing in India and has reportedly shortlisted Foxconn Technology Group and Global Devices Network for the same. The partnership is likely to be announced in July 2015 and Gionee expects to start commercial production by end-December 2015.

That said, the company is planning to go for contract manufacturing for its devices only in the initial phase. In the second phase, Gionee may look at entering into either a joint venture or set up its own plant in India. The company is aiming to make India a manufacturing hub outside China to cater to demand in African and SAARC countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. However, during the initial phase, the company will aim to cater to demand in the Indian market.
