According to the research firm Canalys, the global PC market registered growth of 17.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2013. This growth was driven by increased demand for tablets.

Tablet shipments witnessed a year-on-year growth of 65.2 per cent to reach 76.3 million units, accounting for 48.3 per cent of the total PC market. Excluding tablets, total PC shipments declined by 6.9 per cent on a year-on-year basis. For the period under review, Apple led the PC market, shipping 30.9 million units. The company had a market share of 19.5 per cent and shipped 26.0 million iPads, which accounted for 84.3 per cent of its total shipments in the quarter under review. Lenovo was placed second in the PC market with a market share of 11.8 per cent. The company?s PC shipments increased 25.5 per cent year-on-year, driven by growth in markets outside China. In China, Lenovo?s notebook shipment declined by 11.7 per cent. However, the decline in the notebook shipment was offset by significant growth in other regions, particularly, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, where shipments increased by 30.4 per cent. Further, worldwide, Lenovo shipped three times as many tablets in the fourth quarter of 2013 as HP and Dell combined, excluding the company?s sales in China.

Samsung was placed third in the PC shipment market, shipping 18.2 million units. Tablets accounted for 79.7 per cent of Samsung?s fourth-quarter PC shipments, or about 14.5 million units
