
According to Strategy Analytics, the smartphone processor market was led by Qualcomm in the first quarter of 2013. The company had a revenue market share of 49 per cent in the period under consideration.
It was followed by Apple, with a 13 per cent market share and Samsung, with a revenue market share of 12 per cent. MediaTek and Broadcom are the other leading vendors in the smartphone applications processor market in the first quarter of 2013. The research firm expects new entrant Intel which had a revenue share of 0.2 per cent in 2012 to make big gains in 2013 with its key product Clover Trail+ dual-core x86 Atom chip.
Strategy Analytics says the smartphone applications processor market increased by 50 per cent in the first quarter of 2013. The market was valued at $3.6 billion in the period under review. The research firm points out that Qualcomm?s smartphone applications processor revenue share increased to 49 per cent primarily due to increase in stand-alone APQ-series applications processor shipments. Smartphone brands such as HTC One, Google Nexus 4, LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony XPERIA Z were the leading players using Qualcomm?s processors.
According to the research firm, the low-cost Chinese chip supplier Spreadtrum made strong progress in the first quarter of 2013 with its EDGE and TD-SCDMA smartphone applications processors. Going forward, Spreadtrum is expected to register significant revenue share in 2013 as the chip company is winning deals from tier-one smartphone manufacturers. During the period under review, smartphone vendors shipped 216.2 million units as against the shipment of 152.7 million units in the second quarter of 2012.
