The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed a new telecom network security policy for the sector. The proposed set of security guidelines aims at allowing the law enforcement agencies to access real-time information regarding the exchange of messages, data and calls made by users as well as track their location, when required.
DoT has proposed to extend all technical assistance and offer use of latest technologies and systems to security agencies for deciphering the information received by intercepting telecom networks. Further, the use of latest technology will decrease the instances of information leakage while maintaining privacy of users.
The new policy also aims at setting new parameters and standards to make telecom networks robust and withstand disasters such as a terrorist attack or other natural and manmade calamities.
It proposes to create accredited telecom security assurance and testing labs across the country for security related certification of telecom equipment used by individual users as well as companies.
The decision to formulate such guidelines comes after department has reported increasing instances of terrorist groups having implicit understanding with some nations for carrying high-end weapons as well as communication apparatus.
The draft guidelines have been sent to the Home Ministry, Prime Minister’s Office and National Security Agency (NSA) for further consideration.
