Research In Motion (RIM) has reportedly established a facility in Mumbai to assist the Indian government in carrying out lawful surveillance of its BlackBerry services.
The facility is expected to help the handset maker decode messages (for the security agencies) that have been sent or received by an individual suspected of illicit activities. RIM has clarified that this will be done only if the request is authorised legally.
However, security agencies would still be unable to monitor RIM?s enterprise mail server.
For the past three years, Indian security agencies have been pressurising RIM to provide them with access to BlackBerry communications, citing potential threats to national security.
