The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on two applications related to the 2G spectrum case. One pertained to the court asking the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the Minister of Home Affairs, P. Chidambaram?s alleged role in the case; while the other requested establishing a special investigation team (SIT) to monitor the CBI?s scrutiny of the case.
Janata Party President, Dr Subramanian Swamy, who had filed the application for the CBI to investigate Chidambaram?s alleged role in the 2G case, submitted fresh documents to the court as proof to show that Chidambaram, as the Minister of Finance in 2007-08, was aware of every development pertaining to 2G spectrum allocation during A. Raja?s tenure as Minister of Telecommunications and IT.
The CBI had opposed Dr Swamy?s request.
The request to establish SIT was made by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan.
The CPIL, in a submission before the court, claimed that though the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had favoured auctioning the 2G spectrum, Raja and Chidambaram jointly decided on spectrum pricing and allowed the licenses to be traded, and had conveyed their decision to the Prime Minister.
