The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has stated that Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is expected to safeguard subscribers? interests, in case the new operators’ licences are cancelled for missing rollout obligations or if the service providers are found to be ineligible to bag start-up spectrum, according to news reports.
The DoT has issued 119 showcause notices to various firms in connection with missing the deadline for rollout of 2G services and alleged suppression of information while applying for the licences.
MNP is to be launched across the country by January 20, 2011. According to the DoT, once it is implemented, consumers have multiple options available even in a situation where some licencee or service provider loses his licence. Consumers can switch over, without losing their numbers or services, to other operators.
