After fierce opposition, GSM operators are now agreeable towards reducing call termination charges, the fee mobile phone companies pay each other for moving calls between networks.
According to Rajan Mathews, director general of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) had approached the Telecom Disputes Settlement And Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) seeking an increase in termination charge. The TDSAT has asked the Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) to look into the matter.
The association does not support BSNL’s stand and is now agreeable to a reduction in termination charges. Mathews further added that a reduction did not imply that COAI was giving in to the demands of new telecom operators who had asked TRAI to eliminate termination charges altogether.
