Ericsson has launched a 3G pilot project called “Alokito Bangladesh” offering high speed broadband services in Dhaka. Slated to be completed by October 2008, the pilot will demonstrate high speed internet services and a range of advanced services including mobile health and mobile learning. Ericsson is conducting 3G trials by using the site and transmission networks of three telecom operators including Warid Telecom International (Bangladesh), Grameenphone and Telecom Malaysia International (Bangladesh), which operates under the brand name AKTEL. The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission is likely to issue 3G licences by end-2008 for this purpose.
