The government intends to provide financial support to private players inclined to set up hardware-manufacturing cluster parks. Its objective is to promote domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment through the establishment of special economic zones (SEZs). DoT has proposed that approximately 5 per cent of the sum invested by the SEZ developers (subject to a maximum of Rs 500 million) be provided by the government. Only those product-specific SEZs intending to invest a minimum of Rs 1 billion in a 10 hectare area will be eligible for such support.
