The Ministry of Telecommunications and IT plans to initiate the sharing of towers by telecom operators in rural areas to reduce the cost of offering services, which will result in a further decrease in tariffs. This is part of Project MOST (Mobile Operators Shared Towers), which is aiming to set up 1,800 shared sites in Delhi by 2007. As part of the project, operators have also agreed to share seven transmission towers in Delhi and two in Mumbai. This will decrease the cost of setting up new towers by 50 per cent, declutter the cities’ skyline and reduce call drops that are often caused by the absence of towers.
