TRAI has called for consultation on the lifetime tariff plans launched recently by several mobile service providers. The plans raise a slew of issues, according to the regulator, including long-term sustainability, the implications for orderly growth of the sector and protection of subscriber interests. The consultation move is aimed at evolving a regulatory policy on this issue.

It has also reportedly sought information and data relating to traffic and cost from all service providers who have announced and implemented lifetime validity plans to examine the sustainability and validity of these schemes. According to the regulator, the service providers have not submitted any data yet to support the viability of these plans.
