According to a survey by Amdocs, 81 per cent of consumers will actively be in favour of eSIM-only smartphones in the future and are ready to get rid of plastic SIM cards, as opposed to 19 per cent that are not ready. Meanwhile, 58 per cent of consumers want their mobile network operator (MNO) to integrate eSIM into their offering while 15 per cent do not.

As per the findings, the enthusiasm around eSIM stems from consumers’ understanding that the technology provides the ability to switch service providers and plans in an instant, with 32 per cent of the respondents describing this as the biggest benefit of eSIM technology. Other factors that tip the scale in the consumers’ favour for eSIM include lesser hassle as compared to buying a physical SIM card with 13 per cent of the respondents excited by the prospect of a fully digital experience. According to Amdocs, more than 200 mobile operators in over 70 countries already provide eSIM provisioning and management.

Commenting on the findings, Anthony Goonetilleke, group president, technology and head, strategy, Amdocs, said, “As we continue moving closer to ubiquitous connectivity, this research illustrates the consumer’s enthusiasm for eSIM and the enhancements it brings to the user experience and sustainability. We are seeing eSIM adoption accelerate across the telecoms sector and we expect this behaviour to continue as consumers and communications service providers become increasingly aware of the benefits and possibilities unleashed by this exciting new technology.”
