The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered a probe into the privacy policy update announced by WhatsApp. CCI has said that WhatsApp has breached antitrust laws in the guise of its policy update.

Earlier in January 2021, WhatsApp had announced that it was updating its privacy policy to allow it to share some user data with parent company Facebook and other group firms. This announcement was met with major backlash across the world, including in India.

WhatsApp’s policy update is expected to come into effect in May 2021.

On its part, WhatsApp has informed the CCI that its policy update raised no competition law concerns.
