The fresh auction of 2G licenses will see at least 8 slots of 1.25 MHz up for bidding by telecom players. According to news reports, the government may put a cap on the number of slots to be bid on by existing players.

It is expected that the incumbent players will be allowed to bid for only one slot of 1.25 MHz spectrum in the upcoming 2G license auction. However, there will be no such cap on new players.

Prior to this, the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) had decided that the new players be allowed to buy a minimum of two slots each in the upcoming auction. In addition, the new entrants will be permitted to buy one more slot.

In case the Department of Telecommunications? (DoT) negotiations with the Ministry of Defence to vacate additional 55 MHz of spectrum are successful, new players may be able to avail of start-up spectrum even after existing players win other slots.
