Bharti Airtel?s subsidiary Wireless Business Services has approached the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for allocation of mobile numbers to start testing voice call services on 4G network in four circles, say news reports.
Wireless Business Services plans to test voice calls on its 4G network in the Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala circles. The company has requested DoT to allocate 25,000 numbers out of the existing mobile number series in each circle for testing of voice services.
Earlier, Wireless Business Services had won broadband wireless access (BWA) licence for offering 4G services in these four circles. Bharti Airtel holds 51 per cent stake in the company which was established by chip maker Qualcomm.
Another BWA licence holder Reliance Jio Infocomm is also conducting tests for offering voice calls using 4G network.
Earlier, an inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission had allowed BWA licence holder to provide voice call services by paying an additional fee of Rs 16.58 billion.
