WhatsApp has reportedly begun testing SIM-binding in India to comply with government regulations that came into effect in November 2025, with the implementation deadline now set at December 31, 2026. Some users have reported receiving an in-app notification stating that WhatsApp needs to confirm the presence of their SIM card in line with local regulations. The feature is currently in the testing phase and has not yet been widely rolled out.
SIM-binding is a process whereby an application verifies that the phone number registered with the service is actively linked to the SIM card inserted in the device. This adds a layer of verification beyond OTP-based login systems. In the case of WhatsApp, this could involve periodic checks to ensure that the account is being used on the same device with the registered SIM card, reducing the risk of unauthorised access.
