The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has denied charges raised by an anonymous letter addressed to Justices G.S. Singhvi and A.K. Ganguly that alleges the agency was under pressure from officials in the finance ministry to shelf the 2G spectrum issue probe, according to news reports.

The finance ministry has issued a separate statement denying the contents of the letter. Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan, on whose original PIL the court decided to monitor the investigations into the case, was sent a copy of the letter last week. Bhushan said he would be filing the letter in court on March 9, 2011, the next day for the hearing of the case. The two-page letter has copies of the ED summons issued to 25 parties in the case attached to it.

The letter claims that twenty-three summonses were issued on January 6, 2011 and two were issued on February 2, 2011. All parties were asked to appear before the agency, which investigates violation of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Foreign Exchange Management Act, between January 17 and February 15.  The letter claims that only four of the 23 people summoned appeared on time and the ED took no action against those who did not appear.

The letter also alleges that the four people who appeared were not interrogated and only their statements were recorded.
