Over the past few years, value-added services (VAS) have emerged as a key business opportunity for telecom operators who are exploring alternative revenue streams and customer retention strategies in the face of shrinking operator margins and ARPUs as well as increasing voice commoditisation.

A large number of players have jumped on the VAS bandwagon to improve their financial performance. This is evident from the fact that the share of VAS in operators? revenues has increased from 2 per cent in 2002 to 15 per cent currently.

Today?s market is flooded with a range of services, including music downloads, wallpapers, email, instant messenger, ringtones and gaming.
