TRAI’s recent figures put the market share of private operators in terms of subscriber numbers over that of public sector units, BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).

Private operators have 53.76 million subscribers while public sector operators have 53.24 million, as of July 31, 2005. However, BSNL continues to dominate the fixed line space with 36.8 million subscribers, capturing 78.02 per cent of the market, followed by the private operators and MTNL with 13.63 per cent and 8.35 per cent of the market respectively.
