TRAI’s proposal to implement a penalty of Rs 20,000 per unsolicited commercial call made to subscribers registered with the National Do-Not-Call registry has met with stiff resistance from telecom operators.

TRAI’s proposal to implement a penalty of Rs 20,000 per unsolicited commercial call made to subscribers registered with the National Do-Not-Call registry has met with stiff resistance from telecom operators. Responding to TRAI’s consultation paper on amendment to the Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) Regulations, 2007, the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India has stated that it would be highly unfair to subject service providers to paying a penalty, especially when they are making sincere efforts to implement UCC regulations as well as make them more effective. The association has asked the regulator to review the proposed penalty and defer the amendment. The Cellular Operators Association of India, meanwhile, has also asked for a deferment of the proposed amendment.
