The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) plans to impose fine on the telecom operators, which violate mobile number portability (MNP) regulations, say news reports.

TRAI?s move to impose fine on operators has come as a result of large number of complaints received from subscribers, that their porting requests have been rejected by operators.

In order to ensure compliance with MNP regulations, TRAI has amended Telecommunications Mobile Number Portability Regulations Act 2009. It has made changes in the regulations to incorporate the provisions for levying financial disincentives on operators violating MNP norms.

The regulatory body plans to impose penalty ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 on service providers for flouting MNP norms.

The regulations will come into effect over the next 60 days, thereby providing operators with an opportunity to streamline their current processes to ensure that they conform to MNP regulations.

MNP allows subscribers to switch operators while retaining their mobile numbers. MNP was implemented a cross the country in January, 2011. According to TRAI, till July, 2012, about 60 million subscribers have opted for MNP across the country.
