The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is likely to issue new regulations and penalties on call drops by early 2015. It is reported that rules would have higher penalty for telecom operators that are found offering inefficient services leading to call drops.
According to the industry reports, the calls are dropped due to the lack of frequency airwaves and base transceiver stations, which are inadequate at present to cater to the growing mobile subscriber base in India.
In 2013, TRAI had imposed penalties worth Rs 50 million on operators for providing poor telecom services. The maximum penalty of Rs 1.45 million was imposed on state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for failing to meet 13 quality of service (QoS) parameters.
TRAI had indicated in its Performance Indicator Report that around 14 per cent of the calls on the networks of the telecom operators dropped for the quarter ended June 2014 as compared to 9 per cent for the quarter ended March 2014.
