The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper on ‘The Issues Related to Critical Services in the machine-to-machine (M2M) Sector, and Transfer of Ownership of M2M SIMs’.

Earlier, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), through a reference dated January 1, 2024, had requested TRAI to provide reconsidered recommendations, as per the provisions of the Section 11 of the TRAI Act 1997 as amended from time to time, on –

(a) Identification of critical services in the M2M sector

(b) Transfer of ownership of M2M SIMs

In this regard, a consultation paper on ‘The Issues Related to Critical Services in the M2M Sector, and Transfer of Ownership of M2M SIMs’, seeking inputs from the stakeholders, has been placed.

In the consultation paper, TRAI has asked whether there is a need for a broad guiding framework for defining a service as critical M2M/internet of things (IoT) service. Further, it has asked whether there is a need to bring M2M devices under the trusted source/trusted product framework. Furthermore, it has asked if there is a need for establishing a regulatory framework for the transfer of ownership of M2M SIMs among M2M service providers (M2MSPs).

TRAI has invited written comments on the issues raised in the consultation paper from the stakeholders by July 22, 2024 and counter-comments by August 5, 2024.
