With the aim to implement the mobile number portability (MNP) facility on a pan-India basis within the next six months, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its recommendations on ?Full Mobile Number Portability?. Currently, the facility is available to users within the same service area.
Following the nationwide implementation of MNP, subscribers will be able to retain their existing mobile numbers even when they move to another service area.
In February 2013, TRAI had invited industry stakeholders? views on issues regarding processing porting requests, routing and charging of calls, the method for implementing inter-service area porting and amendments required in the existing licence regime for implementing MNP.
During the consultation process, operators had requested TRAI to waive off the testing fee imposed by the Department of Telecommunications for acceptance tests to be conducted for implementing MNP across the country. The regulatory body has suggested that the testing fee be reduced by 25 per cent.
