In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Gurudas Kamat, Minister of State for Communications and IT said that the Telecom Commission has decided that this was not the opportune time for the listing and disinvestment of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), according to news reports. This, Kamat added, was because such a step may not realise the true value of the company at this juncture.
He further added the Commission has observed that this issue could be revisited if the need arose in the context of any major policy decisions relating to restructuring and repositioning of BSNL.
Replying to another question, Kamat said based on the unaudited and provisional results up to December 31, 2010, it is seen that the financial health of the company has not improved over the previous year.
BSNL, during the fiscal year 2009?10, posted a net loss of Rs 18.22 billion, while revenue declined 10.4 per cent for the reported fiscal at Rs 320.45 billion.
