The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made an amendment to the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal Regulations, 2012, notifying the minimum broadband download speed has been raised from earlier 256 kbps to 512 kbps. The new regulations will be called the Telecom Consumers Complaint Redressal (Third Amendment) Regulations, 2014.
Accordingly, the new definition of broadband is ?a data connection that is able to support interactive services including Internet access and has the capability of minimum download speed of 512 kbps to an individual subscriber from the point of presence (POP) of the service provider intending to provide broadband service?.
The revised broadband speed is line with the guidelines of National Telecom Policy (NTP), 2012. According to NTP 2012, the minimum broadband speed will be increased to 512 kbps and further to 2 Mbps by 2015.
