The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has notified revised standards of Quality of Service (QoS) for Basic Telephone Service (wireline) and Cellular Mobile Telephone Service (the second amendment) Regulations, 2012.
These are aimed at monitoring the QoS provided by the operators to users. The QoS set by the TRAI includes benchmarks like call drop rate, termination of services by the operators. The TRAI would be monitoring operators for various QoS on monthly and quarterly basis.
To check compliance with the revised QoS and ensure that operators deliver satisfactory services to users, TRAI has introduced strong financial disincentives for operators who fail to comply with QoS.
In case operators fail to meet call drop benchmark set by TRAI, they will have to face a penalty of Rs 50, 000 to 100, 00. Similarly, in case the benchmark for any of the customer service quality parameter for cellular mobile telephone service like termination/closure of service benchmark is not met by an operator within seven days of notification, then a fine of Rs 50, 000 will be imposed for each such offence.
