The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has imposed penalties worth Rs 50 million on operators for providing poor quality of services and for unsolicited communications in 2013.

The regulator disconnected 9,00,000 telephone numbers and blacklisted over 1,74,000 unregistered telemarketers for unsolicited communications. In addition, the regulatory body also disconnected the telephone numbers of approximately 60 business houses which included close to 40 real estate companies and other miscellaneous entities.

TRAI imposed financial incentives worth Rs 28 million on operators for failing to meet predefined quality of services (QoS) benchmarks in 2013. Further, a penalty worth Rs 21.5 million has been imposed on telemarketers over the last four months.

According to TRAI, the number of operators not meeting the QoS parameters has reduced from 170 circles in 2012 to 104 circles in 2013. Also, the number of complaints regarding unsolicited communication has reduced from about 50,000 per month a year ago to about 11,000 in 2013.
