RAI has recommended that the Ministry of Communications and IT T introduce a new reporting and accounting system under which telecom companies will have to declare both their consolidated and stand-alone revenues from their different business arms to the government. TRAI has also asked DoT to exercise its powers to carry out special audits on the books of all telecom companies at least once in three to five years. The move follows DoT’s asking the telecom regulator to submit its report on the issue of Reliance Communications (RCOM) allegedly diverting revenues from its mobile services to a subsidiary in an attempt to bring down the total amount it owed to the government as licence fee and spectrum charge. RCOM has denied any wrongdoing on its part.
