As per the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total telecom subscriber base in the country declined from 937.70 million at the end of September 2012 to 935.18 million at the end of October, 2012.

The share of urban subscribers in total telecom subscriber base declined from 63.53 per cent in September, 2012 to 63.17 per cent in October, 2012. For the same period, the share of rural subscribers increased to 36.83 per cent as of October, 2012.

The subscription in the urban areas declined from 595.69 million in September, 2012 to 590.73 million at the end of October, 2012. For the corresponding period the subscription in rural areas increased from 342.01 million to 344.45 million. The monthly growth rate of urban and rural subscription stood at 0.83 per cent and 0.71 per cent, respectively.

The overall urban teledensity decreased from 161.13 in September 2012 to 159.52 in October 2012. For the corresponding period, rural teledensity increased from 40.36 per cent to 40.61 per cent. The overall teledensity in India increased from 77.04 per cent in September 2012 to 76.75 at the end of October, 2012.

As per TRAI?s data, the number of requests for mobile number portability (MNP) increased from 69.78 million subscribers at the end of September, 2012 to 75.14 million at the end of October, 2012. In October 2012 alone, 5.36 million subscribers put in requests for MNP.

In MNP Zone-I (Northern and Western India) the maximum number of requests have been received in Rajasthan (7.15 million) followed by Maharashtra (6.51 million).  In MNP Zone-II (Southern and Eastern) maximum number of MNP requests have been received in Karnataka (9.37 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh (7.02 million).
