According to ABI Research, the share of optic fiber cable-based broadband connectivity is expected to reach 19 per cent in 2013, from 16 per cent in 2012.

The firm adds that this trend is being witnessed in both developed and emerging markets. Country-wise, China is expected to witness a declining trend in DSL broadband adoption over the next few years as China Telecom and China Unicom roll out fiber-optic networks.

Technology-wise, in the first quarter of 2013, DSL subscriptions declined by 3 million. In the same period, the number of fiber optic-based connections increased from 32.9 million to 37.6 million.

Going forward, globally, 25.6 million fiber-optic broadband subscribers will be added in 2013. In comparison, the number of DSL-based broadband connections is expected to decline by 50 per cent over 2012.
