In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications and IT, said that the number of broadband connections was 13.35 million by end-December 2011, say news reports.

Of this, Maharashtra (including Goa) accounted for the highest number at 0.23 million, followed by Tamil Nadu (including Pondicherry) with 1.66 million connections and Karnataka with 1.34 million broadband connections.

Thereafter, Andhra Pradesh with 1.342 million connections was in the fourth position and Delhi was in the fifth position with 1.01 million connections.

Meanwhile, Andaman and Nicobar Islands have the least number of broadband connections at 5,899, while the entire North-east region (Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Manipur) has 53,399 broadband connections.
