According to data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the pan-India GSM subscriber base witnessed a 0.47 per cent increase and stood at 667.56 million in May 2013. GSM operators collectively added 3.11 million customers.

Operator-wise, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular added over 0.91 million and 0.86 million customers, respectively. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel added 0.85 million customers, Aircel, 0.28 million and Uninor and Videocon, 0.15 million each. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Loop did not add any new customers, while Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited?s (MTNL) user base declined by 0.09 million.

Circle-wise, category B circles accounted for 39.68 per cent of new subscriber additions, followed by category A circles, C circles and metros.

Despite a marginal increase in its customer base, Bharti Airtel led the pecking order, with 189.65 million users, followed by Vodafone India (154.69 million) and Idea Cellular (123.76 million). BSNL?s customer base stood at 97.17 million, Aircel?s at 60.36 million and Uninor?s at 32 million.
