The government has questioned the feasibility of state-owned Thai Mobile’s proposal to roll out the country’s first 3G network.

According to it, a national 3G network would require an estimated investment of $2.7 billion ?? a sum that Thai Mobile may not be able to afford. However, the situation will be reviewed carefully. The operator, with only 100,000 GSM subscribers in a market of 34 million, owns frequency in the 1,900 MHz band which could be used to offer WCDMA services. However, the plans of the company, a 58:42 joint venture of TOT Corporation and CAT Telecom, have been stalled because of infighting between its shareholders.
