The Ministry of Communications and IT has stated that it is implementing Technology Development for Indian Languages (TDIL) programme to cater to the emerging language technology needs in the changing Information and Communication Technology environment. According to the Ministry, the country currently has 955 million mobile phone connections. Further there were about 300 million internet connections in the country in 2014.

The objectives of the TDIL programme include the research and development of language technologies, software tools and applications for Indian languages, proliferation of language technology products and solutions. Another objective of the programme is to develop standards for linguistic resources, tools and applications for inter-operability. According to the ministry, various Indian language tools, technologies, linguistic resources and standards developed under the TDIL programme have been made available to the public, such as machine translation, optical character recognition, text to speech, sanskrit tools and monolingual search engines.
