Equipment developed by Tejas Networks has reportedly cleared multi-ministry-backed laboratory and field trials for direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting, validating the technical and regulatory feasibility of the technology.

The trials used Tejas’ MarkOne D2M handset, operating on the ATSC 3.0 standard within the 470-582 megahertz (MHz) spectrum band.

The laboratory trials assessed transmitter spectral compliance and the ability of D2M to coexist with existing terrestrial mobile networks. D2M signals did not interfere with legacy or current networks, including 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G services. The trials also validated the performance of emerging devices, including compatible receivers, dongles, smartphones and home gateways.

Additionally, the field trials conducted in the national capital evaluated real-world performance and user experience. Voice calls and SMS retained priority over D2M signals, ensuring that core communication services were not disrupted by broadcast streams.
