TDSAT dismisses the penalty levied on operators for issuing bulk SIM cards to Matrix Cellular

July 19, 2012 | Archive News

The Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has dismissed the penalty imposed on operators for issuing SIM cards to Matrix Cellular, say news reports.

The operators under the scanner include Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. Prior to this, the Department of Telecommunications had asked these players to pay Rs 0.5 billion as penalty on grounds of issuing SIM cards without proper verification.

Now, TDSAT is of the view that the operators were not permitted to present their case before DoT. In this context, therefore, it has asked DoT to issue fresh show cause notice to these players, in order that they can respond within two weeks.

It has also asked DoT to refund the amount deposited by these companies.
