The Tamil Nadu government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google to establish Tamil Nadu artificial intelligence (AI) labs in Chennai. This MoU was a part of chief minister MK Stalin’s,  17-day visit to the United States, aimed at attracting fresh investments and supporting Tamil Nadu’s economy.

Under this collaboration, the state aims to skill 2 million youth in AI through Naan Mudhalvan upskilling platform, collaborate with startups, and enable micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and the rural economy with advanced technology.

Furthermore, AI labs project is one of the six MoUs signed across several high-impact sectors which are expected to bring in Rs 9 billion in investments and create over 4,000 high-quality jobs in the state. The other alliances include: a partnership with Nokia to establish a new Research and Development (R&D) centre in Siruseri; a deal with PayPal expanding its AI, Machine Learning, and emerging technologies-focused development centre in Chennai; a collaboration with Microchip and Yield Engineering Systems on semiconductor innovation at Coimbatore; synergy with Applied Materials for setting up an advanced AI tech centre; and establishing a new tech centre in Madurai with Infinx.
