The IT and communications minister, Dayanidhi Maran, has approved a draft note of the group of ministers (GoM) on spectrum. As per this, DoT should introduce incentives in the pricing mechanism for efficient use of spectrum. The GoM has also recommended auctioning of 3G spectrum at a reserve price of about Rs 14 billion per operator for nationwide 3G spectrum.

Meanwhile, DoT has asked the GoM to direct the defence ministry to immediately release 20 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band for mobile operators. It also expects the defence ministry to release spectrum in 75 MHz pairs in the 1800 MHz band over the next three years.
