According to Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments stood at 251 million units at end of the third quarter of 2013, witnessing a growth of 45 per cent over the corresponding quarter in 2012.

The top five vendors in this space included Samsung, Apple, Huawei, LG and Lenovo. The research firm states that in the third quarter of 2013, other established smartphone manufacturers such as Sony, BlackBerry, Nokia, and ZTE failed to make it to the list of the top five smartphone vendors.

For the period under review, the global smartphone market was led by Samsung with a market share of 35.2 per cent, followed by Apple and Huawei in the second and third place with a market share of 13.4 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively. LG and Lenovo were ranked fourth and fifth with a market share of 4.8 per cent and 4.3 per cent.

Going forward, Strategy Analytic expects Indian handset manufacturers such as Micromax, Lava, Karbonn and Xolo, etc to make a significant impact in the smartphone segment.
