According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), GSM telecom operators added 5.54 million new subscribers in August 2014, resulting in an increase in the total GSM subscriber base to 749.9 million. In July 2014, GSM subscriber base stood at 744.4 million subscribers.

In August 2014, Idea Cellular added maximum number of new subscribers at 1.72 million. The operator?s total subscriber base for stood at 141.8 million, with a market share of 18.91 per cent as of August 2014. Meanwhile, Vodafone India added 1.22 million users during the month, taking its total subscriber base to 172.4 million and market share to 23 per cent. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added 769, 000 users, taking the total user base and market share at the end of August 2014 at 201.5 million and 28.70 per cent, respectively.

Further, for the period under review, Aircel added 905,000 new users, taking its total subscriber base to 74.8 million, while Uninor recorded an increase of 706,000, resulting in total user base of 40.8 million. Videocon Telecom and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) added 196,000 and 10,017 new subscribers taking their total subscriber base to 5.83 million and 3.29 million, respectively.

The numbers by COAI do not include GSM subscribers of Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices Limited.
