Sistema to provide BSNL with satellite-based navigation system -

The Russia-based Sistema is likely to provide Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) with a global navigation satellite system.

Both Sistema and BSNL are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding, which will allow BSNL to deploy Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS). BSNL is expected to undertake a pilot project to test the service before launching it commercially.

The navigation system enables a large number of applications like police patrol monitoring, transport monitoring, city bus fleet management and accident emergency response system.

Mobile handsets like Apple iPhone supports GLONASS aided applications. Others handset manufacturers like Sony Ericsson and Nokia are working towards implementing GLONASS applications in their smartphones.
